How Scottsdale’s Storybook Entertainment thrills kids with parties

The Arizona Republic profiled Storybook on June 6, 2024, and ran the story in its Entrepreneurs section rather than alongside the weekend listings. The paper covered the company as a Scottsdale business with a founder behind it.

There is more production behind that headline than it suggests. Characters are cast, rehearsed, and directed before anyone rings the doorbell, and Sara trained as a director long before she ran her first celebration.

Help Is Just a Click Away

Kate Rockwood’s feature ran in print, on page 54, and named Storybook under a subhead about how to throw a birthday during a pandemic. What we offered then was a virtual greeting: a character, on a screen, for a child who could not have a room full of guests.

That was a pandemic-era offering and it is not something we sell today. Everything Storybook produces now happens in person, in the room, with the guests.

Storybook was also named in Real Simple in 2020.

Recognition

The credentials behind the work.

Storybook is led by Sara Bernstein, its founder and Artistic Director. She holds a Bachelor of Music in musical production and direction from Northwestern University. She has directed musicals across the Phoenix metropolitan area for over a decade, and served five years as Education Manager for the Arizona Theatre Company.

Her direction has been recognized with multiple Arizoni Awards, including her work on Les Misérables and I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change. She is also still a working stage actor, and still studies voice with the resident music director at the largest professional theater in Phoenix.

That background is why Storybook calls itself a production house. A director decides who is right for a role, what a scene needs, and when it has run long enough, and a celebration takes the same judgment calls.

Sara is glad to talk about how a character is cast and rehearsed, and about what she sees changing in the market: parents increasingly want activities their children will remember rather than decorations that photograph well.

Press inquiries

For interviews, images, and background.

Reach Sara directly. She can provide a founder biography, background on how a production is cast and staged, and high-resolution photography from the company’s own archive.

The archive goes back years, with professional shoots every year since 2016. Every photograph in it is our own work, taken at real celebrations. None of it is stock and none of it is generated.

Storybook is based in Scottsdale and produces celebrations across the Phoenix metropolitan area, from private homes to hotel ballrooms. The five service lines are luxury birthdays, corporate and social events, the holidays, confection catering, and décor and balloon work.
